About The Founder New York Gothamettes founder Maia Weinstock started playing organized baseball in 1985 at the age of eight. One of just a few girls participating in her local Little League, she thrived as a shortstop and pitcher. In her final year, she was named MVP of her team and a league All-Star. Like most girls today, Maia was then encouraged to turn to softball, which she did. She entered her high school's softball program while still in the eighth grade and made the varsity team in her freshman year of high school. However, after seeking out the advice of her former Little League coach, Maia tried out and made it to her local Babe Ruth baseball team—the first girl in her area to do so. She made solid contributions to her team, which went on to take the league title. Reluctantly, Maia decided to focus on softball for the rest of high school. She finished her softball career with a league championship and numerous individual awards under her belt. Maia played squash at Brown University, but she returned to baseball when she moved to New York City. She played for three seasons with the New York Women's Baseball Association and was selected in 2003 to participate in an historic 24-hour-long all-women's baseball game at Tucson Electric Park in Arizona. Off the field, Maia is a writer, editor, and big-time supporter of girls and women in sports and in the sciences. A Brooklyn resident and avid Mets fan, she is the editorial director at BrainPOP, a popular educational website. You can contact her at maia@gothamettes.com |
